August 10, 2009 | Gasoline Diesel Prices Jump

The national average price for gasoline jumped 9 cents to $2.64 a gallon last week, the Department of Energy said Monday. The price was $1.16 less than at the same time last year.

Diesel fuel’s national average price rose 7.5 cents to $2.625 a gallon, its third straight weekly increase.

The gain left trucking’s main fuel $1.728 below the same week last year, just a few weeks after it peaked at a record high $4.764 a gallon on July 14, 2008, DOE said.

Monday’s jump was the biggest since diesel rose 14.6 cents on June 8, in the midst of a seven-week run of increases.

Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
